Have you been admiring the beautiful dogwood and Bradford pear trees in bloom? It’s one of the most spectacular sights here in Tennessee. This is also the perfect time to read The Amish Nanny’s Sweetheart by Jan Drexler!
It sounds like it would be a sugary-sweet story, but you’ll be surprised by the depth of emotion in this little book. As with many Amish novels, much of the plot revolves around young people courting with hopes to find a future spouse. That sometimes makes an Amish story seem like fluff to me. This book, though, allows the reader a deeper view into the hurts and scars the characters carry. Judith and Guy have known their own kinds of heartache. Judith struggled to please her overbearing guardians, while Guy survived against abandonment and physical abuse. It’s a unique view, one that shows how even the Amish have their share of pain in life.
This story is heavy on dialogue, which isn’t usually something I enjoy. However, the purposeful conversations show the way the characters change, and that was a necessary component in making The Amish Nanny’s Sweetheart a meaningful story. I think you’ll enjoy the side characters, too. The plot relies heavily on relationships. This might just compel you to take stock of your own friendships, reaching out with a little more love and kindness.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Jan grew up surrounded by books and storytellers. With Pastors and Teachers populating both sides of her extended family, we aren’t surprised that she wanted to be a first-class storyteller herself.
Born and raised in Michigan, Jan is the descendant of Amish, Mennonite and Brethren immigrants who settled in Berks, Somerset and Lancaster Counties in Pennsylvania in the mid-1700’s. The descendants of these immigrants pioneered in Maryland, Ohio, and finally Elkhart and LaGrange Counties in Northern Indiana in the 1850’s.
During the years when Jan was raising and homeschooling their children, she and her husband moved nine times in thirty years, finally landing in South Dakota where they enjoy incredibly Michigan-like weather. A northerner is always a northerner!
The ideas for Jan’s books come from the stories told by her parents and grandparents, seasoned with a lot of research and imagination.
