When I was in middle school, I had the chance to participate in a Banned Book Quick Recall tournament with a team from my school. I remember the actual competition very well. We met in a community hall and had those buzzers like they used to use in Quiz Bowl. Remember those? Anyway, the way we prepared for the competition was to read banned books. Makes sense, right? Each of us chose a few titles and read them prior to the event. I remember reading 1984, Animal Farm, Grapes of Wrath, Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret, Silas Marner, Lord of the Flies, and A Separate Peace. It was exciting to read these books that caused so much controversy.
A little info about banned books: Banned Books Week was launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in schools, bookstores and libraries. More than 11,300 books have been challenged since 1982 according to the American Library Association.
Now, I have preferences about what I read these days. I prefer clean romance instead of graphic scenes, and family-friendly language rather than profanity. However, there are definitely some blush-worthy parts in the Bible!
Since the Holy Bible is one of the most challenged books in America, it seemed like the perfect choice to feature in Banned Book week. It’s not politically correct, I suppose, but that pretty much exemplifies the whole idea of a banned book. Clearly, there’s the whole religious theme going on. Many people of various sexual orientation and political preferences find themselves disagreeing with its core content. Mature content, violence, and substance abuse are mentioned throughout its pages. Yet the Bible remains on shelves around the world.
