Letter to my future self

Earlier this week, our town got devastating news.  A sweet little 12 year old girl from the neighboring school system passed away unexpectedly due to complications from pneumonia.  The girl’s mother is a teacher in the same school system where I work.  We were all stunned and heartbroken for this family and I’ve been praying for them for days.   I heard that the funeral was an extraordinarily uplifting, inspiring event.  The little girl, Taylor, must have been quite a spirited youngster.  This weekend several articles circulated the Internet about a letter that her parents found that Taylor had written to her future self.  The letter made me catch my breath, realizing how this little girl’s hopes and dreams were so close to her heart.

The experience left me wondering what I might write in a letter to my future self.  I’m not talking about New Year’s Resolutions.  In 10 years, where do I expect to be?  Here are the high points.

1.  My daughter will be attending college — planning to get out debt free.

2.  My son will be thinking about college — also planning to get out debt free.

3.  My husband and I will have all debt paid off, excluding our house.

4.  I will be within 4 years of a comfortable retirement.

5.  We will be active in church.

6.  I will visit my mom at least 2 times a year!  After all, I need to set a good example for my kids.

7.  My husband and I will have a small plot of land paid off, ready and waiting for our retirement years.  We want to downsize and live off the land.

8.  Will I still be blogging?  I hope so!!  But if not, I’ll definitely have a hobby of some kind.  Probably raising chickens or something like that!

Where do you hope to be in 10 years?

Check this out….

Wonderful and a good future to have. It’s unthinkable to have a child pass away. This hit me. My daughter was in the hospital with pneumonia almost two years ago. It still is unbearable to think about what almost happened due to complications to her. I will pray for this family and for you. Good luck achieving these things in 10 years and yes continue blogging and visiting your mom. Family!

  2. I like the idea of writing down where I think I will be in 10 years. Every year I write a letter to myself on the first day of school of where I expect to be at the end of the school year (my students do this too). We all read them on the last day of school. I haven’t written a prediction about 10 years in the future since I was a camper many years ago. I will have to give this some thought!

I am so sorry to hear about the little girl from your town. How very sad. My heart goes out to her family and friends.

  3. What a tragedy. It really makes you rethink doesn’t it. Your # 7 is my #3 and your #8 is my #5. I recently lost my father and God gained another angel. What I learned is we never spend as much time as we should with family. My #1 is to go visit my Mother every chance I get. I go at least once a week right now but I’m hoping to make that even more often.
