Need to take a bookish spring break? Phoebe’s Light, the newest book from bestselling author Suzanne Woods Fisher, is based around Nantucket Island.
Thee and Thy
Initially, “thy” and “thee” were hard to get used to. The dialogue was quite formal! When Great Mary’s journal was mentioned, though, I was intrigued. The entries, written in the late 1650s, set the tone of mystery for the book. Unfortunately, it was difficult to read the tiny, swirly text. Break out those reading glasses!
Nantucket Traditions
To find out why historical fiction is fascinating, read Phoebe’s Light. The cultural details about the whaling tradition in Nantucket, as well as sailor superstition and survival skills, were so interesting to read about!
It may sound silly, but I loved the names the author selected for Phoebe’s Light. So many of these names were old-fashioned and unique; such characters included Obadiah, Zaccheus, and Jeremiah.
Little extras
Finally, the book included some nice bonus sections. The discussion questions are perfect for reader reflection. You could use these in a book club or just to think about the story. I loved the Note to the Reader at the end, and the True/False quiz was enlightening! It’s clear that the author conducted significant research in preparation for Phoebe’s Light. Some of that research is shared at the end of the book as well. A list of books is given so that readers can also join in the fun.
