Start a two-way journal with your kids with the Friday Freebie: Paper Coterie Journal

One great way to keep in touch with your kids is to start a two-way journal.  My daughter and I do this with a personalized journal that is exclusively for us—no boys allowed!

She writes on the left-side pages and I respond on the right side.  Usually she writes something kind of silly (like, what do you do when Daddy steals the blanket at night?)  but sometimes it’s more personal.  This gives her a chance to get things off her chest in a completely non-threatening way.   As an unspoken rule we don’t usually discuss what we write in the journal.   I really enjoy this little tradition that she and I share.  I hope that when she’s a teenager, it will help us to connect even when she doesn’t want to talk about issues.

Interested in starting something similar?  Or maybe you just want a place to record your own thoughts?   Paper Coterie currently has a promo going for a FREE journal.  All you pay is shipping.  Pretty great, right?  Just click here and choose your journal, then personalize it.  Use code welcomejournal at checkout.  This is only available to new customers.

Here are some other ideas for your free journal:

  • Great for your kids’ first day of school notebook

  1. What a GREAT idea! Our kids are still too young to read and write, but I will definitely be implementing a two-way journal! 🙂 It looks like Paper Coterie has a lot of great stuff, too! I’ll head over to check them out! Thanks for sharing!

That’s a very neat idea! I wouldn’t have though of it, but I like it : ). I think it would be great especially for kids who are more introverts and have a hard time expressing their feelings out loud.

  7. This is such a great idea, I love it! When I was in the eighth grade, my English teacher had all of her classes write in journals during the first 10 to 15 minutes of every class. She would write a prompt on the board and you could write about whatever you wanted as it fit in that prompt, and they would be personal prompts that made you think about your every day, what you did, how you felt about something, and that was when I decided that I wanted to be a writer when I “grew up.” That journal became my lifeline in no time at all, and I was taking it home on the weekends to write in. I couldn’t get enough of writing about my thoughts and feelings about things, and every week, my teacher would collect the journals and she would respond to what you wrote in it, giving encouragement or advice when she could. I wrote her a letter when I was a senior in high school thanking her for that journal and for awakening something inside of me that made me realize that I couldn’t be happy doing anything else in life other than writing.
