In the chaos of October, I forgot all about early voting. I’m not sure how it slipped my mind. I saw the notices and mailers. It just never seemed to fit into my schedule. Today when I realized that I missed the early voting window, I complained about it aloud….from my couch. My daughter was curious about why I was frustrated with myself.
How do you make a 12 year old understand that my freedom came at a price? My grandfather, father, and stepfather helped to pay for it. How many service men and women spent time away from home so that I could express my opinion in the voting booth? How many people in other countries would trade places with me in a heartbeat? As I tried to explain all this to my innocent, sweet child, it occurred to me that she needs to know that I’m grateful to live in the United States. I’m thankful for the chance to have children, a career, and freedom of speech. I’m blessed to be an American.
As we enter this period of Thanksgiving, it is one of powerful meaning. Our country embarks upon a change no matter who wins the election. Instead of being negative or snarky about the debates and candidate choices, I want to express to my children that we’re lucky to be able to have the discussion at all.
I’m Thankful. Grateful. Blessed.
