Although the back-to-school experience might seem to be a routine, the first year of heading to college is nothing like the primary school years. For me, heading to college was exhilarating and terrifying at the same time. Being surrounded by roommates, friends, and professors didn’t exclude me from feeling alone sometimes. It was easy to fall into the traps of stress and even depression when weighed down by responsibility. When the book Things Not Seen arrived in my mailbox, it reminded me of those college days when everything I thought I knew went right out the window.

This isn’t your typical Bible story book. Things Not Seen takes those stories that used to be saved for Sunday School and transforms them into memorable moments. Author Jon Bloom puts emotions into the tone of the passage; he reveals the sparkle in the eye of familiar characters. Why does this help a college kid? For me, these stories make biblical characters feel like real-life people. I can imagine myself as their peers, and it helps me to recognize the obstacles they faced. Drawing from their strength, I can stand a little straighter as I face my own obstacles in life. For a college student, that bit of support might be the difference in finishing versus failure.

Things Not Seen is an uplifting read that only takes a few minutes a day to appreciate. Each chapter is very brief, allowing for reflection time and perhaps even a moment of quiet worship. Although the book doesn’t specifically reserve space on the pages for journaling purposes, the reader will find that there are many blank areas at the end of each chapter that would be sufficient for writing down thoughts. It’s a book that teens, young adults, and moms can all enjoy together.
