If you’re familiar with other books by B. A. Paris, you may go into this one expecting a thriller (or at least an element of mystery). I did, at least. The Dilemma is totally different from the author’s typical style. Not saying that’s a bad thing, but it definitely wasn’t what I expected from a B. A. Paris novel.

Summers have always been the time when my family spends the most on groceries. Being out of school means we tend to go on little adventures and often stop at a fast food drive-thru along the way. Being home all day means we eat more often. Since we’ve also been home due to pandemic closures, the food budget has threatened to be explosive!

Our family doesn’t do well on meatless meals or skimpy menus. We’re big eaters. Here are some of the ways I’ve been saving money on groceries right now, despite the rising cost — and even low availability — of food.

I can’t believe it’s been over a week since I posted on the blog! Very sorry to say that I’ve been in quite a funk in recent weeks. It makes me feel guilty to even admit that, because our family is so fortunate to be safe and stable right now. Working from home has me out of a routine; I find myself working on school stuff all the time. Worrying about my students keeps me up at night. My garden has been a good distraction, and now that the weather is looking better, I hope to get outside more. I have several posts and giveaways to get going on the blog, though, so hopefully that will get me back into gear!

In the first few days of quarantine I read several books, but haven’t been able to focus on reading much lately. Again, just not feeling like myself. This week I finally took the time to read a book that’s been on my Kindle for a while.

Just before we got out of school for Covid-closure, our area had an entrepreneur expo for students. It was amazing to see how creative and business-minded my middle school students were! They were encouraged to come up with a product, a business plan, and they actually sold their goods at the expo. I was never so ambitious when I was a child, so this was super impressive for me. Today we got word that school is closed for the remainder of the academic year. Hopefully those kids are still flexing their creative muscles!

Last week, my husband’s grandfather passed away. He was such a strong spark of a man. He opened his home to us every time we visited the family, and our son is named after him. It’s hard to imagine the world without him in it.

Homeschool ACT Prep for high school students

The Savings in Seconds home is about to be rocked by the ACT. My daughter was supposed to take the ACT just before the whole COVID closure happened. I encouraged her to continue to prepare for it. I’ll be thinking about these tips from Greg Landry!

7 Reasons to Ditch the SAT and Laser Focus on the ACT

College admission standardized tests like the ACT and SAT are critically important for two reasons – they are an important part of the college admission decision and academic scholarships are often based on this score (higher score usually means more scholarship money). This score may make the difference in a college acceptance decision or in thousands or tens of thousands of dollars in scholarships.

If you’re home with a “new to homeschool” child right now, chances are good that you’ve been approached with a question that’s outside of your skill set. My son is in 5th grade, and I can tell you — I’m not sure that I’m smarter than a 5th grader!
