The phrase “pay it forward” tends to be synonymous with random acts of kindness, at least in my mind. However, when I read the book The Blessings of Unity, it made me realize that the biggest way I can pay “it” forward is by being loving toward my husband. You see, the happiness created in my own home has tremendous impact on the world with which my family connects. When my husband and I are of one accord, we model that peace and love for our kids. Then, the children go out into their schools and church groups, embodying the peace and love we’ve demonstrated for them. Their light shines bright for others, causing that hope to spread. See the chain reaction? It all starts within the home.

The Blessings of Unity really targets the marriage relationship. Still, unmarried readers with an open mind might be able to apply these ideas to personal devotions, or accountability partners. The basic ideas of focused Bible study and being open to God’s will build the basis of the Blessings of Unity. The author, Richard T. Case, explained how unity looked in his marriage. He gave examples of situations where he and his wife disagreed on something (financial matters or another area) and how they worked it out. Sound familiar?

I found the text difficult to read in large doses. It’s quite heavy with scripture, suggestions, and the author’s personal experiences. Consider using this book as a resource in a Sunday School class or couples’ group study.
