Disclosure: I received this book to review. The opinions shared here are 100% mine.
Fans of medical shows, stand back. Rescue Team by Candace Calvert will have you glued to its pages. Full of action, interoffice politics, and small town gossip, this book was hard to put down. Both of the main characters, Kate and Wes, have personal baggage that threatens to pull them under. They’re fighters, though, and it shows in their every move.
Several features of the book made me consider my stance on things. For one, the Safe Haven law that allows women to abandon their infants, no questions asked, was a major topic in this book. The plight of the Alzheimer’s patients who wandered off was heartbreaking; Alzheimer’s runs in my family and Rescue Team made me realize that a day like that may come in my life. Kate’s strained relationship with her father, a recovering alcoholic, hit a little close to home. Instead of putting me off, these facts made me aware of the book’s relevance to the modern family. It’s the kind of book that many people could relate to and appreciate.
I didn’t realize at first that Rescue Team is the second in the Grace Medical series. Not having read the first book did not impact my enjoyment of Rescue Team. Normally I’m not a big fan of medical dramas. To be honest, I’m a bit squeamish when it comes to most medical issues. So while I enjoyed the high intensity of the book’s plot. my weak stomach was not as happy with my good book.
Very relateable and relevant to today. Sounds like this deals with a lot of issues but is well written.
