A feel-good Christmas story is a must during the holidays. We love to experience these through songs, movies, and books. Here is a list of my favorite 2014 Christmas books. Take a moment to pause and enjoy a heartwarming tale this year! Be sure to scroll all the way down for a chance to win one of these titles.
We actually have our own Christmas cat this year. My daughter has been begging for a cat for years. My husband likes to pretend that he didn’t want one, but guess who has spent the most time with the cat in the last 24 hours? Yep. He is in denial. The Christmas Cat is an adorable book that you won’t be able to resist this Christmas. It’s a bit predictable, but we can all use a little bit of extra happiness this holiday, don’t you think? Through Garrison’s fulfillment of his grandmother’s final wishes, he discovers that God’s plan is always best. Melody Carson keeps things light with humor, but the real story has a lot of emotional baggage. Our sweet Amelia (who passed away several years ago) was a Maine Coon so the cover instantly made me smile. You won’t mind the cliche romance of The Christmas Cat. After all, it’s Christmas.
Home for Christmas is a collection of stories from renowned authors such as Pearl S. Buck and Madeleine L’Engle. Each story is just a few pages long. Tuck this in your holiday box and next year, you can incorporate it into your Advent calendar. Read a story each night to pass the time until Christmas day! Each of the stories sends a spiritual message of generosity and goodwill. The book makes a great read-aloud. The cover isn’t really captivating for kids, but the stories inside are pearls. Home for Christmas can be enjoyed all year round, not just at the holiday season. If you’re looking for a book that will give you food for thought, this is it.
My grandmother has a beef with my cousin’s husband. When they were dating, they broke up for a short time and my grandmother still mentions it periodically. You know, it’s hard to remember sometimes that God has a different timeline than we do. In Suzanne Woods Fisher’s book Christmas at Rose Hill Farm, romance blooms at its own pace. The book is quite short; it can be savored over a few hours on a winter day. The little side story about the mysterious rose was enough to hold my interest. I love gardening and would like to learn how to care for heirloom roses at some point. Typical of Fisher’s writing style, the prose is as smooth as riding in a horse drawn carriage with snow falling all around. It’s a gem that’s not to be missed.
Years ago, a friend from work mentioned that she puts all of her seasonal books in separate baskets. Then at the appropriate holiday, she pulls out those relevant books. I loved that idea and look forward to changing out my books for Easter, Halloween, and Christmas. God Bless Our Christmas is a super sweet softcover board book that your family will enjoy. Some of the phrases are written in read; these are the parts that my son (5 years old) likes to read out loud. The best parts of this book are the illustrations. They’re soft focus scenes of darling polar bears enjoying hot cocoa, and precious penguins decorating a Christmas tree. The birth of Jesus is brought up at the end of the story in a meaningful way.
