Disclosure: I received a free book in exchange for a review. Opinions shared are mine.
Well, those 2 months went by really fast! It’s wrestling season so we’re capital-B-BUSY around here. I’ve spent lots of time in the car, shuffling my son from one activity to the next. Luckily, sitting through practices and tournaments means that I get plenty of chances to read! My newest book to feature is Cold Light of Day by Elizabeth Goddard.
Small town mysteries are my current favorite genre, and Cold Light of Day delivers in a mighty way! The opening pages set up the story with a frightening scene, and the action just keeps running from there.
Cold Light of Day features a female chief of police in Shadow Gap, Alaska. That’s one of my favorite story setups; I have read several series based on a similar situation, although in a different setting. What I really liked about Autumn is that her toughness wasn’t evidence that she didn’t have a heart. She’d dealt with many traumatic exeriences in her life, and she turned that trauma into something positive. Her fierce devotion to her town was an outpouring of love. I also loved Nolan’s protectiveness. I wonder if the next book in the series might follow him?
The story had many twists that came as big surprises. Without giving anything away, I’ll confess that I definitely didn’t see a couple of them coming. For those who don’t enjoy books that are heavy on the religious side, let me note that there are only a few biblical references. Mentions of characters praying and believing in God is the gist of it. The mystery and suspense is definitely the main objective in this book. Just a warning that there is a lot of violence in some of the scenes. Though it’s not graphic, it’s quite frequent and the suspense made me nervous at times!

Synopsis:
Police Chief Autumn Long is fighting to keep her job in the quiet Alaska town of Shadow Gap when an unexpected string of criminal activity leaves her with a wounded officer, unexplained murders, and even an attack on her own father. Despite her mistrust of outsiders, she turns to Grier Brenner, a newcomer who seems to have the skills and training Autumn needs to face this threat to her community.
Grier is in Alaska for the same reason so many others are–to disappear–when Chief Long enlists his help. He emerges from the shadows and proves his mettle, but his presence in her life could be a deadly trap for them both. If his secret is exposed, all will be lost. And he’s not sure even Autumn could save him.
As the stakes rise and the dangers increase, Autumn and Grier must rely on each other to extinguish the deadly threats.
