When my kids were small, I used to keep a book basket that contained seasonal and holiday stories. It was a fun way to refresh the little library, and also made the books seem new each year. Dachshund Through the Snow would have been a major hit with my children! By the way, anyone else have to look twice in order to spell “dachshund”?
Though the setting of this book is Christmas in a snowy Diggityville, it could really be any day in the life of a young child. Feeling small is no fun, and children of all ages will relate to Crosby’s little-dog syndrome. When he saves the day, Crosby seems like the new Rudolph! The story ends with a good character-building message that can be reinforced all year ’round.
Aside from the Christmas theme, the language of the text is engaging as well. Phrases like “tip tippiest toes” highlight alliteration, emphasized further by red print. Onomatopoeia is sprinkled across the pages with words such as “crash” and “tee hee” that kids will love to anticipate. What a fun book to read this Christmas!
