Some summer entertainment in Asheville

Today we took a short road trip over the Blue Ridge Mountains into Asheville, NC.  We enjoyed the beautiful weather while looking at the gorgeous mountain views.  The skies were absolutely blue and had the prettiest, puffiest clouds ever.  When we arrived in Asheville drove around for several minutes looking for a parking spot.   It reminded me of the National Lampoon European Vacation when the family drives around Big Ben and Parliament for hours.  At least while we were stopped at traffic lights I could watch the hackey sack players in the small park for some summer entertainment.  Finally my husband remembered a little parking area that we used in the past so we circled around once again.  I noticed this beautiful church and had to take a picture of it!

We walked around and window shopped for several minutes.  The stores in Asheville are enchanting.  There are so many unique places to shop.  I saw jewelry, spices, hand-loomed fabrics, and so much more.  All of it was wonderful.   Finally we arrived at our lunch destination.  You’ve read my opinion of Mayfel’s before.   I couldn’t wait to visit again!!  This time since we arrived around 1 PM we were able to choose from their breakfast menu as well.  I was overjoyed to be able to get the Mountains to Sea entree which features two handmade crab cakes sauteed in butter, with Eggs Benedict served atop an English muffin and then smothered in house-made lime hollandaise.   Oh my stars.  I sigh just thinking about it.  My son was playing with my phone and refused to give it back so I could take a picture for you.  Sorry, I just couldn’t fight that battle with those delicious bites sitting before me.  Believe me, it was a divine feast.  The only other crab cakes Benedict I’ve had that even came close were in Hilton Head.  The dish at Mayfel’s was far superior.   The rest of my family had the normal (hamburgers and chicken tenders).  I don’t know what they were thinking.  My daughter said, though, “You can’t get a meal like this just anywhere.”  She was right.

But friends, this is the real highlight of our meal.  As we were finishing up our meal I remarked to my husband that I would love to try their beignets.  I wanted to eat them last time but we were in such a hurry.  So being the dear that he is, he got me an order to go.  Here they are.  Or were, I should say.  Because those babies went FAST once we were in the car.  How in the world could we resist these little pillowy bites of goodness?  My kids were amazed that such food even existed.

As we walked around Asheville’s eccentric downtown district, we encountered many street performers.  We loved the unique sound of these entertainers.  One man, wearing what appeared to be a Dr. Seuss hat, was juggling various objects and happened to stop as we passed.  He invited my daughter to choose from his assortment of tools.  He had some crazy choices like a sink brush, a rubber duck, and a wrench.  Apparently he took the three selected objects and created a story about it.  It was hilarious to watch and so engaging.  Whenever the crowd shouted “Higher” he tossed the items even higher.  We were amazed!    In one street corner a couple was playing some cool instruments while singing.  The woman tap danced on what seemed to be a metal cabinet door.  It was fun to watch and we really enjoyed the songs.  Another man played some form of a violin and had it attached to a speaker-contraption that made the music sound like an entire orchestra.  It was so beautiful!!  He was raising money to record a new CD.    There were so many more but I didn’t get pictures of them all; I was too entranced by the music.  If you go, be sure to take some dollar bills or at least some pocket change.  Part of the charm is being able to toss a bit into their instrument case.

    Cinny recently posted…My dad…my inspiration! Happy Father’s Day! #MonstersU #DisneyPlanesMy Profile

  4. I loved asheville. The “Scene” was decidedly hipster and there were so many good restaurants it was impossible to pick! Plus the fact that it’s the jumping ground to head to the built more is all the more reason to stay.

    • Oh, we LOVE the Biltmore! I haven’t been for years (my son would cause us to be permanently exiled from it, I fear). My favorite times to visit are in the spring when they have the flower festival and at Christmas it’s simply breathtaking!!!

  5. This looks and sounds like such a great place to go. I love the picture that you took of the church and those beignets look delicious. Thank you for sharing your trip with us readers.

  6. Sandy McFadden says

  11. I stopped by Asheville on a road trip a few years ago! What a cute and charming town! I dined at this adorable little cafe downtown and had an amazing heirloom tomato sorbet that I still think about!

  12. What a fun time! The food looks delicious!!

  13. That church is gorgeous! I love old buildings but it kind of makes me sad when I think about how today so many buildings aren’t built to last.

  14. I love the picture of that church you took. Those little bites of heaven look so good and made me sooo hungry! So now I have to go make me something to eat. Thanks for sharing this it seems like you had a great time.

I live in N.C., and have visited Asheville several times. I must confess that I have yet to try Mayfel. Next visit I will make a point to stop in.

  16. Those beignets look awesome!!

  17. Kathleen says

Asheville sounds like an amazing place to visit. I have never heard of beignets before and I am curious what they are. Maybe like a cream puff? They look pretty yummy! Of course I have the biggest sweet tooth of anyone I know. Thanks for sharing your tip with us! =)

    • Beignets are kind of like fried doughnuts, or puffed fried bread. The dessert ones have powdered sugar on the outside, but they’re also made as savory sandwiches with meats and other fillings inside. Yum!!

    • You know, the more I thought about this, I think a better comparison would be a funnel cake!! These are much more like funnel cake than doughnuts.

  18. Debbie Welchert says

Oh how I wish we lived close. It sounds like such a wonderful place to visit and so much fun. The food sounds fantastic too. I sure wish we had places like that around here.

  19. Susan Johnson says

I was only about 4 years old the last time I was in NC, and now live all the way over in Oregon. I’ve often thought of taking a trip down the east coast (I was born in NJ, my family drove down the east coast to Florida then headed west) and travel the same route. If I did, I’d look forward to seeing similar beautiful and interesting areas in NC when I travel through.

  20. natalie nichols says

As a Maryland girl, finding good crab cakes outside of MD is something I take seriously. Haha! Sounds like a great place!

  21. When I lived in NC I used to love stopping by Ashville. It is a great little town.

  22. Ashley Nolan says

Ashville is a nice place to visit, my family goes almost every summer.

  23. Carissa Joslyn says

I used to live in North Carolina! I lived in Jacksonville, not sure how far it is from Asheville, but this looks like a great place, I’d love to see people on the streets singing and making music. That just doesn’t happen where I live now.

If I’m ever in NC again, Which i have friends in Virginia so i may be, i’ll have to go down there!

  24. Robin Wilson says

It has been so long since I have visited Asheville! I about 15 minutes South of Charlotte so it’s only a few hours from here. I have no excuse other than time and money! but it is such a beautiful place. Thanks for the pics and the memories!

  25. Sounds like fun! I won’t be visiting, mostly because I live far, far away and have no interest in going somewhere even HOTTER than where I live during the summer…

  26. Sylvia Ortiz says

Asheville, NC sounds like a great place to visit. I hope to be visiting my oldest son, daughter-in-law AND only grandson at the Fort Bragg military base in NC next month – and maybe get a chance to see Asheville firsthand. Thanks for sharing.

  27. I haven’t been to Asheville in ages. Your post makes me want to go back this summer. When I was a kid, my cousin and I used to pretend that the Biltmore House was our summer home. We had it divided up into sections.

  28. Christina Howell says

If we ever visit this area, then I will diffently do some of the things you mentioned here. I am a big foodie and I really would love to have some crab cakes and those Beignets.

  29. I stopped in asheville while traveling around the national forest a little over a year ago. It was beautiful. I wish we had had more time there as I would have liked to see more of what the town had to offer. As it was we only had time to stop at the collective bookstore that was very near that church pictured.

    • I know just which bookstore you’re talking about! When we were there, they were featuring bacon-and-chocolate milkshakes at the little soda shop. I didn’t try it but I was curious!

  30. Sherry Compton says

How fun! I love that he created a story out of the three objects. That could get interesting.

  31. Sherry Compton says

I’m glad your husband circled around again. That church is beautiful. It’s amazing the sites you will see when you are just driving around.

  32. Betsy Barnes says

I live near Boone, NC, so, it is a little like Asheville, however, I must admit, I haven’t been down their in years. The area around these two towns are great for summer musical festivals. We like attending a few here, also our weekly farmers market has music, it’s an all day event. 🙂

  33. That whole trip looks like it was really fun! Wish I had a beignet!!

  34. Pam Gurganus says

  35. What a fun place! The beignets look amazing. I have never had them but have always wanted to give them a try

  36. I love beignets! A friend of mine’s in-laws live in New Orleans, and she learned how to make them, she brought a fresh one in for me, and I fell in love!

  37. I want to thank you for the share, this is such a lovely place.

I’d like to visit, looks and sounds like it would be lots of fun.

  39. I’ve heard many times that Asheville is a beautiful place – and I’m planning to go the next time I visit my cousin and his family in Atlanta. We will all make the trip together – and we’ll be sure to stop at Mayfel’s for a meal!

  40. I’d love to visit the Blue Ridge Mountains and stop off here. Looks like a neat place.

  41. Julie Waldron says

Beautiful! Looks like someplace I’d like to visit.

  42. Since my hubby is an engineer, he is in awe of the craftsmanship of these old historic buildings, and would love to see this church. Not to mention the stained glass windows.

  43. It looks like a nice quaint little place. Violins and banjos on the street. How cool is that!

  44. Dee Lafrenz says

There is a place that use to be a speak easy in the roaring 20’s, carved bar, old classy restaurant, and they make home made mini loaf of french bread with brie plate that is heavenly. I love these mom & pop and historic places.

  45. I spent the night once and regret not having more time to look around and visit a while. Next time I will make sure there is time.

  46. Sherry Compton says

We were just talking about that National Lampoon’s scene the other day. We have recently had several of those roundabouts put in. No one is really sure what lane to be in or how they work.
