Even the dog is sick. TGIF

We are the sick house.

I even made tomato soup tonight in the hopes that symbolic comfort food would get my family through to the weekend.

The Sick House -- savingsinseconds.com

This week was the culmination of many different ailments at the Savings in Seconds house.  Calgon, take me away!  My sister brought dinner last night to get us through the worst of it.  I was ever so grateful because in the aftermath of taking care of everyone, I just didn’t have the time or energy to cook.

First, my husband had his second kidney-stone surgery in less than three months.  Poor guy.  I don’t know if his body decided to become a kidney stone factory or what, but he’s been in misery for what seems like forever.  We’re hoping that the surgery did the trick, although he’s been drinking water like a fish for the past two days trying to pass what’s left.  His pain medication nauseates him, yet he can’t go without it because the pain makes him sick to his stomach, too.  Catch 22.  I help him get up and down into the bed, to the bathroom, or whatever else he needs, hoping that it’s enough to help him recover.

Next, my daughter was sent home from school.  We think she had a reaction to a medication she was taking, although her fever seemed to suggest that she had a virus. The 103-degree fever lingered for days. Normally she’s a very perky little girl but the fever reduced her to laying in the bed all day long.  It was sad and scary.  Her doctor wasn’t sure what was wrong and I was half expecting the CDC to show up and quarantine us.  It wouldn’t have been the worst thing; at least then I could have finished reading my book.

My son has some kind of cold or virus festering.  I’m ignoring it as long as possible, hoping he’ll bounce back. He has that neon green crust on his nose that makes me want to bathe him in antibiotics.  Will the weekend be enough to purge it from his system?  Let’s cross our fingers, shall we?

Even the dog is sick today. Someone fed her something akin to toxic waste; her gas is putrid and makes us want to flee the room.  I suspect my son, who seems to share “one for me, one for you” with most of his food. No wonder she wants to lay under his feet at the table.

You’d think that all of this illness would make me run for the hills.  But it doesn’t.  I have my moments when I just want to drink a cup of hot tea and pretend that they’re all snug in the bed for a long winter’s nap and not because they’re confined to it.  But really, I have so much to be grateful for.  My family isn’t feeling well, but I still have my family.  We’re so fortunate to have a roof over our heads and a way to take care of our needs.  I’m even thankful for the sweet dog despite her poisonous emissions.  When I say TGIF, I really do mean it. Thank God for my blessings.

I hope everyone is better soon!

  2. That stinks. Here’s to hoping you all get better soon. 🙂

  3. I understand what you’re going through. We’ve been suffering from one thing or another since the day after Christmas, so I’m thankful we at least had a festive and healthy Christmas! LOL I hope 2014 brings an end to the colds, the strep throat, influenza and ear aches!

I think the caring nature of “mom” comes out in times of most need. I know that when my daughter had to have constant care the nurse that I didn’t know existed in me came out and I was able to handle meds and IVs. She is much better now, and I hope your family is, too. I will pray for you and yours. With so much illness and germs going around, there is something in the air and it’s awful. I hope this surgery works for your husband. Hug them all and make sure to take care of yourself, too.

I hope you all get better soon! At least you got to make a cute soup!

  6. My nephew likes the gold fish in his soups at any time. Hope they made your family smile. Get well quick for everyone.

Everyone here is getting sick too. When one gets better the next one gets sick and this has been going on the whole school year so far. I’ll be glad when spring gets here so we can open some windows and let some sickness out.

  8. I hope everyone feels better SOON!

  9. Well, at my house it started with the Cane Corso. He had the squirts for 2 days, so fixing rice meals for him. After him, the Lab started…more rice meals. Then the boyfriend caught the flu for 5 days…only if he didn’t complain like the dogs. Somehow I avoided it.

  10. Sounds like a rough week to say the least. Hopefully now that it is six days from this post your all back to normal. It’s never no fun when the whole family is sick with one thing or another.

  11. I’ve had weeks like that too! I’m thankful you weren’t also sick because there is nothing worse then being ill and having to take care of people on top of it!

  12. I love your attitude! Way to look on the bright side. Your family is blessed to have you. Hope you all get to feeling better…even your dog:)

Wow, that is rough. I see you posted this over a week ago so hopefully by now everyone is feeling a little better. It’s so nice that you have a sister that will bring dinner! What a blessing. Good luck to all of you!

Things will improve. Keep those comfort foods coming!

I have just been diagnosed with a kidney stone so I can definately have sympathy for your husband. I don’t know what they are going to do with me yet but I guess I will find out sooner or later whether I want to or not lol. When anyone in the house is sick it is hard on eveyone. I hope everyone is healthy and happy now.

I hope that everyone at your home is finally on the mend… we have been extremely lucky here to rarely get sick…not even colds…but this year has taken it’s toll on us as well… we managed to snag a virus and bring it home…on the plus, it’s just been fever and aches, with no projectile bodily fluids..YAY!!!

  17. I can totally relate except at my house it’s not just the dogs, it’s all the dogs! I have one recovering from eye surgery, one with bronchitis, & one with a skin condition. All this ,and I’m sick with a flare up of Crohn’s Disease. At least everyone is quite.

I hope you’re feeling better by now. I’m sure you are! Nothing beats the power of TLC, but when you’re a mom, you’re giving all the TLC and not getting any. I hope you were able to take some time for yourself!

  19. Sarah Hayes says

we’ve been very lucky here so far this yr with no major sickness. Im sorry to hear that you all havent felt well.

  20. Yikes!!! I can remember as a kid all of us kids being sick, but not my mom or the dog. I love tomato soup, I do think it can soothe so many aches and pains, it is the most perfect comfort food, especially with goldfish!!! You’re the best mommy!

LOL, This so sounds like my family. crystalbluern at onlineok dot com

  22. Both my brother and dad had kidney stone issues. My daughter recently got sick when a kid she met at the hotel we were staying at coughed on her. She was miserable with a sore throat, stomach upset, and a bad cough(still lingering). When we tried to give her a pill, she succeeded in throwing up the pill all over the bed and hotel carpet. NOT FUN! She is a different person when she’s sick — very mopey and whiney.

My hubby caught something from her but wasn’t too bad. Luckily, I didn’t catch anything. It is miserable taking care of others when I’m also sick.

But your attitude and sentiment is great and SO true.

  23. It’s been quite a while since you wrote this. I hope everyone is up and about (including the dog).

  24. That’s terrible everyone’s sick
