Heartbreak Bay left me gasping for breath as not one but TWO mothers fight for their children’s lives. I loved how Gwen’s family continues to strengthen their bonds despite hardships. I’m torn between wanting peace for Lanny/Connor and also wanting to have more Gwen Proctor tales! This story had some gruesome and terribly sad details. It’s hard to read about bad things happening to kids. I guess the reason Heartbreak Bay has so much power behind it is that Gwen has so much to lose.
If you haven’t read the other books in the Stillhouse Lake series, this isn’t the place to start. You definitely want to read these in order. While you probably could treat the books as standalones, there’s just too much backstory to miss by jumping in the middle. It’s also helpful to learn how the characters have grown and changed throughout the series.
While you’re considering this book, take a moment to send good vibes to Rachel Caine as she battles cancer. I’m the praying type, and have been saying a prayer for her every time I think of her. In the author’s note at the end of the book, she mentioned that she is doing a clinical trial. Follow her on Twitter where she frequently posts updates about her health.
Big thanks to the author for sending me a copy of this book! Opinions shared are mine.
