Here and Gone by Haylen Beck – book review

Welcome to the book that almost certainly guarantees my son will need to go with me into the women’s restroom for the rest of my life…..

(Disclosure: I received this book from the publisher; post contains affiliate links. Opinions shared are mine.)

You see, I let my son go into the men’s empty restroom unaccompanied a few months ago.  I stood outside the door and called in a few times to make sure he was okay. Then a man went in….and my blood pressure skyrocketed.  My little guy was taking his time and would not answer when I called for him, driving me to near panic when the man yelled out, “He’s okay, ma’am.  Please stop calling in here.”  FREAK OUT TIME.  I was such a nervous wreck when my son finally came out (completely unharmed) that I insisted he just go with me to the women’s room whenever he’s with me.   The stress of that day had nearly become a faded memory, until I read Here and Gone by Haylen Beck.

The story sounds like one you’d hear on Nancy Grace.  Battered woman on the run with her kids, trying to leave her past behind.  Suddenly her children are missing and everyone points fingers.  It reminded me of a situation that happened near here last year, when a man abducted his niece from school and ran off with her.  The entire area was on desperate watch for the child.  Putting myself in this mother’s shoes for a moment makes my heart seize up.

Beck’s characters are unique in several ways.  He bridges economic gaps by pinning the very rich against the impoverished.  Racial barriers are thrown up, and even gender plays a part in this game of opposites.  Those on the wrong side of the law start to toe the line between law enforcement and vigilante behavior.  What a striking story!

Sensitive readers should be aware that Here and Gone contains profanity, physical abuse, and graphic violence.

Do you like stories with suspense and drama?

Yes, I love suspense in a book.

I read HERE AND GONE, too. HERE AND GONE is what I call a “grabber.” In the first chapters, you’ll want to know what is happening. Then, at about the halfway point, this book will grab your attention so tightly you will want to read late into the night.

In the first chapters, the whole situation with Audra and the sheriff is too frustrating (she isn’t as smart as her 11-year-old son), and child abduction is too horrible. But the chapters are short and necessary to the story.

Next are chapters about Danny, which are necessary setup. Again, they are short.

After that, while HERE AND GONE is somewhat predictable, it is still a grabber.

  2. OMG!! I have to read this book ASAP. It’s totally the kind of book that i love!

  3. I can tell that I will not be reading this book.
