I’ve followed The Amish of Hart County series starting with the first book.  His Promise, book 6, is my favorite one!

This was supposed to be an Amish Christmas read, but it slipped between the cracks of my teetering book pile.  Though the book itself is smaller than the other editions, the cover is a delight.  I just love the bright red barn against the backdrop of a snowy Kentucky scene.

In His Promise, author Shelley Shepard Gray gives us two strong characters.  Grace and John Michael have an indirect history, and their bond is quickly rekindled through shared circumstances.  A little dog named Snooze takes center stage, too, which was charming.  I also admired the way Grace took care of an elderly widow named Miss Dorma.  Overall, the plot worked well despite the vast variety of situations the characters found themselves in.

Even though this is book 6 in a series, it can be read as a standalone.  There’s not a significant backstory to learn. While there are brief mentions of other characters from the series, it doesn’t detract from the reading experience if you don’t know those characters.   Just understand that a lot has happened in the town of Horse Cave over the past two years!  You can find the rest of the series on Avon Inspire’s website.
