It is officially Feb. 1. Please tell me somebody else still has their Christmas tree up! THIS is why I normally take ours down on December 26. Once I head back to school in the new year, I just don’t have the energy to do anything else. So, our tree is still set up, and not in a cute we-have-trees-up-all-year kind of way. On the flip side, I have this great new cookbook to enjoy! Check out Hong Kong Food City by Tony Tan!
I was so impressed with the beauty of this book. It’s full of glossy photos, tantalizing descriptions, and hearty warmth. It’s surprisingly educational. I knew nothing about the history of Hong Kong before perusing these pages.
It would make a terrific coffee table book. Just make sure you keep some of the basic ingredients for one of the meals in your pantry because you’ll be hungry after flipping through Hong Kong Food City! Some of the ingredients might be hard to find, so try to locate a good Asian food store in your area. It’s a great reason to have a local adventure!
If you’re looking for something a bit out of the ordinary in terms of recipes this is a good option.
One lucky reader will win a copy of this book, thanks to Quarto. The giveaway is open to US readers ages 18+. Void where prohibited by law. Good luck!

In HONG KONG FOOD CITY (Murdoch Books / October 8, 2019 / $29.99 USD / $38.99 CAN), Tony Tan imparts his incredible knowledge of the dynamic cultural landscape of a city whose Chinese roots intertwine with deep colonial connections with England. The first book to look at the Hong Kong food scene from all perspectives, HONG KONG FOOD CITY is a comprehensive book that not only contains approachable authentic recipes but provides the background to the eclectic food scene via an explanation of history, culture, cooking styles and social norms. Its 80 recipes are inspired by the island’s dishes, from the Peninsula Hotel and the stalls of the night markets, to the high-end restaurants of the Grand Mandarin Oriental and a legendary dumpling house on the edge of Kowloon.
Part food immersion, part travel experience, HONG KONG FOOD CITY extends beyond the recipes as it offers stories of chopstick etiquette and tea houses and explains how Hong Kong became the city it is today. In combination with the stunning shots of the city’s streets, galleries, restaurants and famous light show, these stories create a window into the culinary culture of Hong Kong making it accessible and enticing to all.
Some of the ingredients might be hard to get. Looks as though the recipes are adapted to my western palate.
Too bad it’s US only, yay hong kong!!
I would like to fantasize about all the fine food and craziness in Hong Kong!
I love cooking and trying new recipes.
That cover is calling me! It does look like a beautiful book for reading and displaying.
