Disclosure: I received a copy of this book from the heavens above….er, I mean, the publisher. Opinions shared are mine.
My family knows that if I’m being too quiet somewhere, I’m probably reading in a cozy chair. There was a time in my life when I wanted to rush off and do, see, taste, touch, shop, experience….but most days, I’d rather be reading.
On Saturday, I threw a bit of a temper tantrum when my family happily ignored the state of our house. Most days, I can just ignore it, too. All I wanted to do was sit on the couch and read, of course. Instead, I had to get up and wash something.Apparently I didn’t ingest enough caffeine on Saturday because my mama eyebrows were all the way up into my forehead. I went into a tirade; consequently, they all turned off their devices, quietly folded and organized and wiped surfaces like my obedient minions.
Then, it happened. My husband made the innocent mistake of asking if we could maybe get rid of some of my books. Oh, people. The butterfly effect of my head whipping around could blow a hurricane off course. The poor man didn’t know what hit him when I launched my attack missiles. He quickly changed the topic while I fumed in the corner. It’s giving me heart palpitations right now, just thinking about getting rid of books I haven’t had the opportunity to read yet!
So, author Anne Bogel gives me total justification for indulging in my reading life. You can’t help but relate to her as she name-drops Jane Austen, or refers to being a “kindred spirit.” She shares her guilty reading secrets, which makes me want to confess my literary sin of book hoarding. (If you tell my husband I said that, he’ll be your new best friend.) Even the footnotes are special in I’d Rather Be Reading.
This book entertains like a compilation of bookish blog posts. Some pages are entirely about the acknowledgments in books. Other chapters are devoted to maturing as a reader, prioritizing reading time, and real-life experiences that relate to the books we read.
I do warn you that your TBR list will probably grow with each page you turn in this book.
Would YOU rather be reading?
I love reading also. It helps me to relieve stress. It takes me to places I may never get to physically visit! Great post!
(For all those times you’ve said I’d Rather Be Reading — book by Anne Bogel) This book sounds good to me. I do read a lot more during the colder winter months when things slow down around here for awhile.
