Right now, we’re all in such a state of turmoil. The schools here are closed, and we’re currently headed into a scheduled spring break. My colleagues and I have been working hard to prepare for distance learning to start the week after spring break. I’ve been so grateful for the online learning platforms we were already using. My students are reading ebooks from Epic and our school system’s online learning library. Still, many kids will need (and want) access to print books. I haven’t finished reading this series yet, but I do recommend The Legends of Lost Causes series for students who are reading from home through the COVID closures!

The characters in this series are unique and funny. Kids will love the witty chapter titles and zany adventures. It’s a great distraction from today’s somber reality. Readers are exposed to interesting vocabulary, such as “palomino” and “tonsure”. Also, geography plays a natural role in the series. Reading books like The Legends of Lost Causes series is a good way to keep kids’ brains engaged while learning from home.

About Louis:

Louis Sylvester is a professor at Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston, Idaho. He teaches courses on Creative Writing, Research Writing, Introduction to Film, Screenwriting, and The Ethics of Art and Censorship.

Together with his wife, he enjoys playing tabletop games from his collection of over 1,000 board and card games.

His two dogs are named Cake and Muse. They are the best.

His writing partner is the talented author Brad McLelland. Their first novel is titled LEGENDS OF THE LOST CAUSES.
