One of my happiest motherhood moments was the opportunity to visit Harry Potter World in Universal Orlando.
The Harry Potter series is a family favorite. Many of my sixth grade students read the books in my classroom, and we get to have fun discussions about the Greek mythology hidden in the pages. I’m not really much of a fan of fantasy or even magic, but I just love the way J. K. Rowling tied together so many story lines. The books are like a comforting, cozy blanket that I long to enjoy each summer. Life Lessons Harry Potter Taught Me by Jill Kolongowski offers such insight into this timeless world.
Written in essay format, this is an academic view of the Harry Potter books. It’s written for adults who aren’t too grown up to admit they like a children’s book. It’s fun to look back and remember details from the book, while thinking about themes and symbolism through a grownup perspective.
I was already teaching elementary school when The Harry Potter series whirled into the literary scene. It changed the world. When I moved to middle school, my colleagues and I taught reading classes based on the books; we had a sorting ceremony and created a Mirror of Erised. It was so much fun! The books didn’t shape me as a child, but they did impact my teaching. I love how this series continues to be a powerful tool in developing young readers.
