I’ve been reading The Hollows series and love it! The Hollows is a strange little town, hiding secrets and mystery where you least expect it. I started with Fragile.
Unger’s stories have a way of hooking me, drawing me into the characters’ lives so that I just can’t rest until I know what happens. I love her writing style; it’s descriptive and realistic.
This story takes place in a small town called The Hollows. The main plot line revolves around a missing teenager, but there’s a lot more going on behind the scenes. It takes the entire book to see how the dots are connected.
The constant shift in characters was a little unsettling. At times I had a hard time figuring out whose perspective was being described, and sometimes I forgot who the characters were (there were a lot of them!) This story isn’t scary or even thrilling. It’s very dramatic, though, with a lot of dark stuff going on. The mystery, though, is involved and twisted, making it worth the read.
There is one thread that didn’t seem to get closure. I wondered if Unger plans to write a separate story about Lily?! Beyond the surface connection, that “case” just didn’t seem to fit with the rest of Fragile.
This book reminded me of stories written by Jodi Picoult and Emily Giffin. It’s very character-driven, while providing enough complexity to keep the events moving at a steady pace.
Darkness My Old Friend follows Fragile (which I suggest reading first, since it introduces you to Jones Cooper.) Again, Unger’s writing is descriptive without being superfluous. Her characters seem so real and open. Somehow everything ties together and it all falls down. I got this one from the library and already have the next one on hold.
One of the characters in The Hollows series is Eloise. Her story is told in more depth in The Whispering Hollows ebook. It was quite short; I was able to read it in a handful of hours.
I loved Eloise’s easy-going personality and the way she fit into the whole Hollows community. If there was another book entirely about Eloise and her abilities — or even about Agatha — I’d buy it in a heartbeat!
I gave the book 4 stars instead of 5 because there were some discrepancies between the stories. Maybe it was just me, but some of the details weren’t aligned, making it confusing and took me out of the moment. Otherwise, this is an excellent book for those who like stories about psychics and mediums.
