I’ve been subscribing to Audible for years now, ever since we moved to a small town and a 40-minute commute. It’s paid for itself easily through high-price books available for one credit (Harry Potter!) and the free monthly books I receive. Usually, the credits go toward books the kids will enjoy. We’re currently listening to Charlie Hernandez and the League of Shadows — which my kids LOVE — but for the rare moments when I’m in the car alone, I want to treat myself to an adult book. Luckily, I’d received a free copy of Lullaby by Jonathan Maberry a few months ago as an Audible freebie.
This appealed to me because it was only about 45 minutes long. I’m going to have to look for more short stories like this!
Lullaby starts off with a young couple looking for a house. They settle on a beautiful home where they can start their family. Though they’re warned that the house is “haunted,” they seem to take it in stride. That is, until weird things start happening!
This reads almost like an X-Files story without Scully and Mulder. The writing is perfect. It’s descriptive without being unbelievable, and refined without requiring a dictionary. The narrator was perfect for this book. His voice and rhythm made the story absolutely mesmerizing! I enjoyed every moment of the book and wanted more at the end.
This is a great option for those who want just a little bit of a scary story. Whether you don’t have time to read a lot, or you just want a small dose of fright, try it out! Ghost stories are my favorite, and this was just the perfect amount of spooky for me.
Wow, this book sounds just like the kind of books I love to read. I love it when the book ends you want to read more. Now that’s a great book.
I’ve never listened to a audible book before but this one sounds interesting.
This book sounds like an intriguing and rally great read.
