I’m thrilled to see so many wonderful children’s classic books come to the big screen lately. Don’t you think these titles belong on the bookshelves of the little ones in your life? Macmillan Collector‘s Library offers lovely covers in delightful pocket-size editions.
These classics are so dear to my heart. They’re perfect for reading aloud at bedtime. I love the charming covers. Why not start a new tradition this year?
Start with a familiar story, such as a fairy tale or Alice in Wonderland. When your child realizes the story differs from the movie version, talk about the differences. Then, show your children how to envision the story in the mind’s eye.
Children are naturally imaginative. Sometimes we repress that imagination by only showing the story in one format — visual entertainment. Challenge your child to imagine The Secret Garden or Anne of Green Gables just as the story reads. After that, watch the movie version.
I’ve been practicing that strategy for years. My children insisted that they preferred the movies (no matter the story) until we started reading together. before watching the movie. They’ve finally realized that the book is often better than the movie! I present it to them by explaining that the movie is one person’s interpretation — or imagination version — of the story. What’s in their own minds can be just as powerful.
This is a great time to introduce teens to your favorite books from school. My daughter is starting to be interested in the works of Jane Austen. I’m excited to share my favorite author with her!
