Over my teaching career, I’ve noticed that the number of children who have problems with fine motor skills seems to be going up. Each year, there seem to be more children who struggle to write a few words. Is the gift of technology to blame? I’m not sure, but it’s a problem that only seems to be getting worse. Basic handwriting looks like modern calligraphy for middle school students these days! Happily, there’s also a renewed interest in handwriting for some students.
Simple tools like these brush pens can offer a nice starting point for those interested in trying new handwriting techniques. My daughter squealed with delight when she saw these markers, and immediately grabbed them as her own. I appreciate the sturdy case they’re packed in. It helps when art supplies are organized and tidy.
For those who are ready to go beyond the basics, master calligrapher Molly Suber Thorpe brings the new title Mastering Modern Calligraphy. The book comes in a spiral-bound format so readers can easily lay the pages flat as they practice. If you’ve already mastered the “typical” styles, follow the author’s lead in creating your own techniques.
The pages offer a very detailed look at flourishes, spacing, and even curved details. Whimsical variations on the traditional calligraphy style can be fun, and I love how this book encourages creativity. I haven’t tried different nibs or inks, so I appreciated the suggestions given in these pages.
This book would make a terrific gift! Pair it with a set of supplies and wow your gift recipient.
I really love traditional calligraphy. The content of this book looks impressive. This definitely looks like it is more for those familiar with some aspects of calligraphy.
This looks like so much fun to learn and this looks like a great book for just that.
