In October, I joined Book of the Month as an affiliate. For my first book, I selected Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo. Admittedly, I chose that one because my daughter is a Six of Crows fan. I figured that if I didn’t like the book, she probably would. HOLY HORRORS, this book took me by complete surprise. Five stars, no hesitation!
This was the ghost book I’ve always wanted and MORE. It was like a grown-up Harry Potter story. Readers go behind the scenes of the Yale they never knew. I was grateful for Google, which helped me learn quite a bit about New Haven’s history. Scandalous secret societies, magical elements, and noteworthy characters made Ninth House a stand out. Dark and edgy, it blended the best of paranormal and urban fantasy. There were some really tense moments; be aware that the book contains many triggers that might bother sensitive readers.
There were times in the first quarter of the story when I faltered, thinking that I couldn’t get into the story. At that point, I was reading it in bits and pieces. Finally this weekend, I devoted a few hours to getting into the story. Once I allowed myself to really get immersed in the book, I did not want to stop to even come up for air. Definitely need to carve out a day to read this one!
This was my first time reading a Leigh Bardugo novel. Certainly won’t be the last.
Book of the Month is a great way to save time and money on the books you want to read!
What I love best about Book of the Month is that I can skip any month, no questions asked.
My next BOTM is The Sun Down Motel! Can’t wait to dive into that one.
Looks like an interesting book.
I enjoy a good ghost book. Sounds fun
I am thinking that I should give this one a try. Olivia ended up not finishing it, but I think it sounds like one that fits with my reading tastes. I am so happy to hear that you loved it.
