Grab your trail mix and flashlight, then buckle in for a wild ride! Lisa Gardner’s new book One Step Too Far is another 5 star story!
You should know that I rarely give 5 star ratings to books that I read. My criteria is pretty much like this: If I would read it again or I want to keep this book forever and always, it’s 5 stars. Only about 7% of the books I read fit that standard for me. I absolutely loved Gardner’s book #1 in this series, Before She Disappeared, and its main character Frankie Elkin. In One Step Too Far, we get to see Frankie tackle an unknown foe in the Wyoming wilderness. She’s a force to reckon with, despite her carefree lifestyle and scathing sarcasm.
This was one of those books that I had to force myself to put down. I didn’t expect to love Frankie Elkin as much as I do, but she’s one of my favorite book characters now. She has a servant’s heart disguised in grit and determination. This can be read as a standalone, but I definitely recommend reading book 1 just to understand some of the references — and to make a connection with the Boston detective who is mentioned several times but (sadly) does not make an appearance in this book.
There’s so much to love about Frankie, but I especially love her witty sense of humor. Lisa Gardner’s writing style is perfect, thriller mixed with hilarious even in dark moments. She plugs in the perfect amount of humor during times of stress, which is why I was able to read for several hours straight despite many tense events in the story. I figured out much of what was going on by about 2/3 into the book, but there were still some twists waiting. The ending was awesome, and I can’t wait to see what Frankie does next.
About the Book:
Frankie Elkin’s mission in life is to find missing people that the public has forgotten. But when she heads into the wilderness with a rag-tag eam in search of a man who went missing on public lands over five years ago, Frankie isn’t prepared for the brutal elements…or the far more sinister threats lurking in the woods around them. With no way to call for help, it’s a race against the clock to make it out of the wilderness alive, much less with answers.
