It’s been a while since my kids exclaimed, “Look what I can do!” At some point in childhood, it’s common for children to transform their thinking into “I can’t” phrases. Wherever that mindset shift comes from, we need to change it back. Oscar Can… by Britta Teckentrup is a great start.
What a delightful story! Oskar is a little raven with big actions. The pages, though, are simple and beautiful.
It’s sweet that Oskar enjoys many activities with his friend, Mo. The story is irresistibly cute. Preschool children will enjoy looking at the clean illustrations. The text length is ideal for emergent readers.
Oskar Can… presents a world of possibilities for children. Its positive message focuses on happy parts of life. I appreciate that Oskar isn’t always the best. He doesn’t always jump the highest, and he still needs a floatie in the swimming pool. In my opinion, the message that “everyone gets a trophy” ultimately sets children up for unrealistic expectations. This book gives children a soft place to land. Instead of worrying about not being on top every time, Oskar demonstrates success by his enjoyment of the activity. That’s a great outlook!

This is such a refreshing viewpoint. How to battle the I can’t. Great book
Our grandkids would love this book because they are learning new things every day.
I want this for my granddaughters. Sometimes they need to be reminded they don’t always have to be the best as long as they try their best.
