The Less People Know About Us by Axton Betz-Hamilton

Disclosure: I received a free copy of this book from the publisher. Opinions shared are mine.

Over the weekend, my sweet sister tried to give me a self-help book. Pish Posh! I don’t want to read about bettering myself when I have a juicy domestic drama to read. This one comes in the form of a memoir — the title says it’s “a mystery of betrayal, family secrets, and stolen identity.” Sounds thrilling, right?! Big thanks to Grand Central Publishing for sending me a copy of The Less People Know About Us by Axton Betz-Hamilton.

Great and Small Prayers for Babies

Disclosure: I Am a B&H/LifeWay Blogger and received a free book. Post contains affiliate links; if you make a purchase, I may earn commission. Opinions shared are mine.

When we sit down for our family meal, my husband is usually the one to vocalize the prayer. He always says a brief blessing and we all dig in. My kids are militant about holding hands while we pray; we have to make a circle with our hands and they will wait until all hands are engaged. This has been a tradition for so long that it stunned me when my kids declined to say blessing out loud on their own a few nights ago. I’m not sure if this is a new development based on a phase, age, or just general discomfort of being in the spotlight.

Fire Storm by Nancy Mehl

Immediately after reading Mind Games by Nancy Mehl last year, I added Fire Storm to my wishlist. Profiler shows are some of my favorite genres to watch on TV (Criminal Minds, anyone?) and this series features a really cool gal named Kaely Quinn. I was really hoping that Fire Storm would take a deeper look at Kaely’s backstory and relationships. In some ways, those hopes were realized. Overall, though, this book took a different route than I expected.

Mastering Modern Calligraphy by Molly Suber Thorpe

Over my teaching career, I’ve noticed that the number of children who have problems with fine motor skills seems to be going up. Each year, there seem to be more children who struggle to write a few words. Is the gift of technology to blame? I’m not sure, but it’s a problem that only seems to be getting worse. Basic handwriting looks like modern calligraphy for middle school students these days! Happily, there’s also a renewed interest in handwriting for some students.

I’m not a journal keeper, so the gratitude book I started a few years ago has long gone by the wayside. I try to stop and appreciate the little things that make me happy.

Grace Goes to Washington by Kelly DiPucchio and LeUyen Pham

Disclosure: I participated in the blog tour for this book. Post contains affiliate links; if you make a purchase, I may earn commission. Opinions shared are mine.

One of my family’s favorite trips was our visit to Washington D.C. My kids loved seeing the government buildings, museums, and historic monuments. I had the chance to visit again a few years ago on an extended field trip with my school. Many children will not have the opportunity to see Washington, at least while they’re young, so I’m grateful there are books like Grace Goes to Washington to support what they’re learning in the classroom.

It’s time to stash away stocking stuffers for the Christmas season. It’s a relief when I have most of the shopping finished before Thanksgiving — it means I can enjoy the holidays without feeling the crunch. This year, I’m going to put this survival bracelet in my son’s stocking. I think he’ll love it! I always wondered what you could do with these paracord accessories.

Among the Hidden series by Margaret Peterson Haddix #LibraryLoveChallenge

For several years, I had the chance to read Among the Hidden with my classes. This is book #1 in the series by Margaret Paterson Haddix. My daughter read the book in 6th grade, but when our curriculum requirements changed, the book was taken off the list and put in the 4th grade curriculum instead. In the years since that happened, none of my students have read this book as a class. It’s still one of my favorites, and it brings up such excellent topics of conversation. I decided to listen to the audiobook in the car with my kids so my son could experience the story.

Ovation Brands’ Wishes Family Night

Disclosure: I partnered with Ovation Brands for this promotion and received free meal vouchers. Opinions shared are mine.

One of our family’s favorite fairytale moments happened in ‘Ohana Restaurant at the Polynesian Resort in Orlando. We were enjoying our meal when the fireworks went off over Cinderella’s Castle at Magic Kingdom. The “Wishes” music was piped in through a speaker, and we got to enjoy the whole program from the magnificent view of the restaurant. It became a family tradition that we still find time for whenever we’re in the Orlando area, whether we’re enjoying a Disney vacation or not!
