Okay, I might be exaggerating just a tad. But you don’t know how I am in the morning. Until my eyes see natural light, I can be a bit of a beast. For a few months now, I’ve needed to have strong light when putting on my makeup. Age does that to a person, I’ve heard, and it’s starting to hit me. I usually put on my makeup and style my hair in front of the mirror in my bedroom, but it’s an over-the-door mirror. My kids often complete their homework assignments in the car. We’re on the go all the time, and it can be a real pain to find a sharpened pencil to use on a math worksheet! The handheld sharpeners I’ve owned tend to get jammed easily. They also separate from the base, then spill shavings all over the car. So frustrating! My mom often reminds me to do something for myself once in a while. It’s easy to get lost in the daily miasma of work, meal prep, cleaning, laundry, and general life. As for the Savings in Seconds house, we’ve been back to school for over a month now. My kids both take a packed lunch each day, and it can be tricky to get everyone ready to walk out the door. My husband usually prepares the packed lunches, and he does a great job of making sure the kids have a daily snack as well. Welch’s Fruit Snacks bring smiles all around. Growing up, my mother would not buy me a pair of elastic waist pants. I had a pair of sweatpants to wear to gym class and that was it. She said elastic waist pants would make me fat. Never mind the thought of exercising, portion control, or anything else…according to mom, the pants were in control. I have to admit that it was a slippery slope once I did wear stretch pants…but so worth it. Some days, you just need a pair of yoga pants. If they have a pocket for your cell phone, even better!

Last year my son was required to read 20 minutes per night, and he had to record his progress on a reading log. He was faithful to do it without arguing (although he doesn’t love to read.) This year, he doesn’t have that requirement and I can tell a big difference in the amount of reading he does on his own. So I made my own reading rule. That’s allowed, right? It’s the sad life of a TK — teacher’s kid. We used to listen to a devotional every morning on the way to school, but this year I’m having him read a devotional to me out loud on the way home.
