Okay, I might be exaggerating just a tad. But you don’t know how I am in the morning. Until my eyes see natural light, I can be a bit of a beast. For a few months now, I’ve needed to have strong light when putting on my makeup. Age does that to a person, I’ve heard, and it’s starting to hit me. I usually put on my makeup and style my hair in front of the mirror in my bedroom, but it’s an over-the-door mirror. So, every time my husband wants to walk through the door, I release a huffy breath of frustration. Then this lighted makeup mirror from MCHATTE arrived and everything’s good now!

Stuff your wallet AND the stockings #ad

Now through December, I’ll be featuring Christmas ideas and ways to save on your gift list.  If you haven’t started thinking about the holidays yet, it’s okay.  Start now by putting away a little at a time and you’ll be ready by early December.

This year my daughter is going on a big trip with the school band, so I’m trying to save our pennies as much as possible.  It’s going to take a lot of pennies to get her there!  To make sure it doesn’t all hit us at once, I try to take care of a few things each month.

My first suggestion is to start with the small stocking stuffers.  These are easy to find, and it’s a good reason to take advantage of sales.  When the kids were small, we used to buy each child one “big” toy.  They took a long time to choose that big toy, and often changed their minds several times before Christmas Day arrived.  By filling in the gaps with the stockings, I always have more than enough stashed away to have a wonderful assortment of gifts. Plus, I didn’t have to worry if they changed their mind since I waited to buy the “big” gift. [Read more…]

Electric Pencil Sharpener to keep in the car

My kids often complete their homework assignments in the car. We’re on the go all the time, and it can be a real pain to find a sharpened pencil to use on a math worksheet! The handheld sharpeners I’ve owned tend to get jammed easily. They also separate from the base, then spill shavings all over the car. So frustrating! Now we keep this electric pencil sharpener in the backseat of the car.

My mom often reminds me to do something for myself once in a while. It’s easy to get lost in the daily miasma of work, meal prep, cleaning, laundry, and general life. I enjoy simple pleasures — it doesn’t take a lot of money or effort to impress me. Luckily, my new sparkly ring doesn’t require much of either!

As for the Savings in Seconds house, we’ve been back to school for over a month now. My kids both take a packed lunch each day, and it can be tricky to get everyone ready to walk out the door. My husband usually prepares the packed lunches, and he does a great job of making sure the kids have a daily snack as well. Welch’s Fruit Snacks bring smiles all around. Even I love to take them for a snack!

Some days, you just need a pair of yoga pants and a robe

Growing up, my mother would not buy me a pair of elastic waist pants. I had a pair of sweatpants to wear to gym class and that was it. She said elastic waist pants would make me fat. Never mind the thought of exercising, portion control, or anything else…according to mom, the pants were in control. I have to admit that it was a slippery slope once I did wear stretch pants…but so worth it. Some days, you just need a pair of yoga pants. If they have a pocket for your cell phone, even better!

BibleForce Devotional #BibleForce

Last year my son was required to read 20 minutes per night, and he had to record his progress on a reading log. He was faithful to do it without arguing (although he doesn’t love to read.) This year, he doesn’t have that requirement and I can tell a big difference in the amount of reading he does on his own. So I made my own reading rule. That’s allowed, right? It’s the sad life of a TK — teacher’s kid. We used to listen to a devotional every morning on the way to school, but this year I’m having him read a devotional to me out loud on the way home. We’re starting with the BibleForce Devotional!
