I like to listen to audiobooks while cooking and doing laundry. Those activities aren’t easy to do with wires from earbuds hanging about. My family does not enjoy listening to my audiobooks, though, so I needed to find another option. Wireless earbuds are so handy to have, but I did not want to buy an expensive pair that would make me stressed about losing or damaging them. When the kids were small, it was easy to keep them entertained. A simple cardboard box, a pack of stickers, or even a flower with a cup of water could become an adventure. As they got older, though, it took more to hold their attention. If it’s a required activity, my kids will be present in body, but not necessarily in spirit. I absolutely loved Hester Fox’s first novel The Witch of Willow Hall, so I couldn’t believe my luck when I was given a copy of her second book! The Widow of Pale Harbor has such an ethereal, beautiful cover.

I’ve been on such a Lisa Unger kick lately! After reading the first few books in The Hollows, I was thrilled to receive a copy of The Stranger Inside. Wow. This one knocked my socks off. It’s already been touted by PEOPLE Best Books of Fall 2019!

My teenager is now in 10th grade, and it’s hitting me hard. Soon she will (hopefully) be out in the world with much more independence as she begins college and her own adult life. While I am thrilled for her, it’s also scary to think of my once-tiny child as a responsible, contributing member of society. It’s not that I want her to stay a little girl forever. I just thought it would take a little longer for her to actually be grown.

Since we’re a few short years away from her first ventures out of the nest, it’s a priority to help her become more self-reliant. This isn’t something that can happen overnight, as you’ll likely agree, so we’ve been taking baby steps since she was a tween. Here are some of the things I’m focusing on this year.

The struggle to reduce clutter in my house is now at an all-time high. My kids are bigger, so there are no plastic toys scattered around the house anymore. However, the kids are bigger, so their clothes, shoes, and other gear grew along with them. Tripping over my son’s man-size shoes does not seem as sweet as gazing upon his tiny-foot Keens from the olden days. It’s a good thing other things in my house can still be fun size, like this mini screwdriver set.

One of my coworkers has an essential oils diffuser in her office. It puts the most wonderful, ethereal scents into the air! I love how it freshens up the place with just a whiff of sweet scent. I don’t have a diffuser, but my mother-in-law sent me a pretty silver essential oils locket. The chain makes me itch, so I have the locket hanging from my rearview mirror. I plan to use my new Allenbelle essential oils in it to make my car smell good.
