Happy Messy Scary Love by Leah Konen #happymessyscarylove

Start making your summer reading list now, and add Happy Messy Scary Love to your top 10.  The audiobook version is great, too!

My copy of the book didn’t arrive while I was on the school camping trip, so I listened to the audio sample.  It’s the perfect amount of quirky and realistic, with cute dialogue and relatable characters. [Read more…]

My kids usually take all of the Audible credits, but this month I snagged one for myself. I’ve enjoyed Peter Swanson books in the past, so I downloaded Before She Knew Him.

One of my best friends at work is an avid reader. She loves edgy, suspenseful books like I do, so we often swap titles with each other. Last month I showed her how to access some of her Amazon Prime perks including the Prime library. I told her the first book she needed to read was Stillhouse Lake by Rachel Caine, which is currently free for Prime members as part of the 10 books you’re allowed to have at a time. When she walked into my classroom the following Monday, her eyes were wide as saucers. She loved it, and couldn’t wait to read the next one!

For Mother’s Day: An Amish Homecoming by by Amy Clipston, Beth Wiseman, Shelley Shepard Gray, and Kathleen Fuller

Disclosure: I received a complimentary book from the publisher. The post contains affiliate links; I may earn commission if you make a purchase. Opinions shared are mine.

My mother-in-law retired from her job a few months ago. She’s been a busy bee taking care of everyone, but hopefully someday she’ll be able to spend her days reading! When she visited recently, the subject turned to Kindles and ebooks. We discussed the benefits of an ereader and she indicated that she might like to have one. When possible, though, I think she prefers print books, as I do. Sometimes print book and ebooks are even comparable in price, as with An Amish Homecoming from Zondervan.

Last week I read I Want You Gone by Miranda Rijks and really liked the premise of the story, even if the rest of the book didn’t meet my expectations. I decided to give the author another try with her book Fatal Fortune.

Life Lessons Harry Potter Taught Me by Jill Kolongowski @UlyssesPress

Disclosure: I received a free book from the publisher. Opinions shared are mine.

One of my happiest motherhood moments was the opportunity to visit Harry Potter World in Universal Orlando.

The Harry Potter series is a family favorite.  Many of my sixth grade students read the books in my classroom, and we get to have fun discussions about the Greek mythology hidden in the pages.  I’m not really much of a fan of fantasy or even magic, but I just love the way J. K. Rowling tied together so many story lines.  The books are like a comforting, cozy blanket that I long to enjoy each summer.  Life Lessons Harry Potter Taught Me by Jill Kolongowski offers such insight into this timeless world.

The Line Between by Tosca Lee * 2019 Favorite

Disclosure: I received a copy of this book on Netgalley. Opinions shared are mine.

A few years ago, there was a good run on post-apocalyptic books.  We had The Hunger Games, Divergent, and even The Host (which my friends didn’t like, but I still loved.)  Lest you think that ship has sailed, Tosca Lee strolls in with her new book The Line Between.   It’s all kinds of amazing!

Mother’s Day is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the women in your life.  They don’t have to be your actual mother.  If she provided guidance, support, or a kind word, honor that woman.  Since the date is upon us already, you might be feeling a little frantic. Not to worry!  Amazon has some great options for quick-to-ship, thoughtful Mother’s Day gifts.  [Read more…]

The Knight in Battered Armor by Brianna Tibbetts @JustRead review

Disclosure: I received a free download of this book. Opinions shared are mine.

Now that my children are both double-digit ages, I don’t get to read many books for little children.  The Knight in Battered Armor is illustrated in a way that will appeal to younger ones, but the story is one that older kids will appreciate.  [Read more…]

I Want You Gone by Miranda Rijks #IwantYouGone

Disclosure: I received a free book from the publisher. Opinions shared are mine.

Laura has had a very, very bad week.  In the past few days, she’s been told that she was dead (via Facebook and a newspaper obituary), had issues with her boss, and can’t figure out if her boyfriend is a rapist.  If she had a bit more common sense, she might have been able to stop some of this mess before it started, but our girl just doesn’t clue in until the very final pages.  I Want You Gone by Miranda Rijks touts itself as a psychological thriller with a nerve-shredding twist.  It shredded my nerves alright, but only out of sheer frustration.
