Christmas Caramel Murder by Joanne Fluke

Cozy mysteries seem to be everywhere these days. This was the first one I’ve read.  When the book Christmas Caramel Murder came in the mail, I didn’t expect to be overwhelmed by plot and literary prose.  Instead, I thought it would be a fun, lighthearted read on a snowy day.

One of our family’s vacation rituals is to end the night watching Food Network together.  It’s one of the only channels we all enjoy, and we especially like to see the competitions.  Love a la Mode reminded me of the kids we’ve seen on Teen Chopped and similar shows. [Read more…]

I really try to make reading exciting for my students, but sometimes there’s a student who won’t be enticed by any book.  Fortunately, most middle schoolers like to draw.  Books like How to Draw and Paint Super Cute Animals are usually non-threatening to a student who says, “I hate reading!”  Who can resist these adorable animals on the cover?  It’s just as sweet as it seems.

I’ve read a few books by Deborah Raney and always enjoyed her ability to describe characters and their innermost feelings.  In her new Chandler Sisters series, Reason to Breathe, Raney introduces readers to an entirely new family situation.  Grief and sibling dilemmas complicate matters in the story, with emotions getting further entangled when the sisters have to deal with the past.
