It was kind of funny when my husband opened the box containing this review book. He read the title aloud, like he always does, and walked away. Then he stopped and turned around as he realized what the title actually said. He asked me, “So I need prayer?” Well, of course he does! The truth is, I’d been praying for my husband before we even started dating. My friend Kristi and I were prayer partners and we added our future husbands to our list. Unfortunately once we married, my prayers for him got a little dull and predictable. So I’m setting out to change that, with this book in hand and my head bowed.
Praying for Your Husband from Head to Toe seemed like a cheesy title to me at first. The selfish part of me said, “well, is he praying for me?” But that’s not the issue here. The reason for this title is clear. It’s focused. And it’s literal. You really do pray for him starting with what he hears through his ears, what he sees with his eyes, and so on. I regularly pray for my husband’s defunct kidneys, but rarely do I consider praying for his ears! The book gives you the exact words to say. It doesn’t feel scripted at all though. And of course you can add your own personal details as you feel led to do so. I also found that praying these specific words helped me to recognize moments throughout the week that seemed to be directly related to my prayer. Each “day” takes about five minutes to read straight through. If you don’t have that much time to sit and read, consider parceling out the prayers throughout the day. In fact, you could even write a few down on post-it notes and put them in your car or on your mirror to remind you to pray for your husband through the day. Consider it an experiment! Author Sharon Jaynes uses theological and scriptural references throughout this daily guide to reinforce the meaning behind the message. Jaynes uses examples like Eve and Mary to point out what God can do through women.
Using her daily guide, God is transforming my heart, too. As I think of my husband being covered in prayer as he goes throughout his day, it gives me comfort and peace. Have you ever tried being angry at someone you’ve been praying for? It’s really, really hard. The Holy Spirit softens my heart toward my husband, helping me to let go of things that might have caused a grudge before. I love the Time for Reflection section at the end of this book. It provides some thought-provoking questions that make the praying experience so gratifying. There’s even a website that helps to connect you with other praying wives!
Let me mention that this book would be an excellent way to prepare for marriage. If you’re a college student and hoping to meet Mr. Right, don’t wait to get engaged to pray for him. Why not start now? If you’re a bride-to-be, consider using this book as a way to focus on your heart’s desire before you tie the knot. There may be a few sections you’ll have to modify (such as the Fatherhood section) but that’s easily done. There are thirty “days” in all, plus a few extra chapters for things not visible to the eye such as his salvation. So if you start now, you could even finish the book by Valentine’s Day! Imagine giving your husband a card saying “I’ve been praying for you from head to toe” for Valentine’s Day. As for my marriage, I’m interested to find out how this whole prayer experiment works. I just know God has something amazing planned!
Love it!
