There comes a point in the snow day where everyone is too cold or tired to play outside. That’s a great moment to pull out the puzzles and get to work! The whole family can get involved, or the puzzle fun can be a quiet pastime to enjoy on your own.
Do you have a hard time getting your family into puzzles? Here are some tips to make it a bit easier.
- Ask your kids to pick a puzzle with a high-interest image or theme. When we had the chance to select a puzzle from Hallmark’s collection, I asked my daughter to choose one for us. She asked for Marina Dreams, which comes as no surprise because she loves water.
- Put all the pieces in one spot, and decide on a strategy before letting the kids loose. I usually put all the pieces in the non-picture half of the puzzle box. I also tell my children that they need to pick up any pieces that drop. If you do have a missing piece, Hallmark has an email address that you can contact.
- Give each child a task. For the smallest kids, have them pick out the pieces that are obviously border edges — easy to spot because of their straight side. Have a big celebration when they find one of the corner pieces! An older child can sort the pieces by color or patterns.
- Don’t stretch out the puzzle session. If the kids get tired of working on the puzzle, take a break. You don’t want this to be a burdensome activity. They can return to it later in the day, or even on the next snow day.
- Once you have the pieces separated, put them in baggies or even a divided craft box. That way, all that sorting didn’t go to waste.
