My daughter is learning how to drive. All of those commercials that show a toddler driving, then snap back to a 16 year old….yes, those are true. She’ll always be my baby girl! Refuge at Pine Lake by Rose Chandler Johnson opens with a scene between a mom and daughter who have a tense moment. In this story, readers get to see inside interpersonal relationships while enjoying sweet romantic tension along the way.
This book is dialogue-heavy while relying on a love triangle for the romance. You can imagine what happens when The One That Got Away comes back into the picture! I felt that much of the drama stemmed from main character Robin’s immaturity. She was young and hadn’t experienced much of life yet, which impacted her ability to make strong decisions based on common sense. The emotions ran high in most situations that came up in Robin’s life.
Though it’s touted as a Christian contemporary romance, Refuge at Pine Lake didn’t have much in the way of a scriptural theme. It was more of a clean contemporary romance. Passionate kisses were the most graphic it got.
I loved the setting of this story! Refuge at Pine Lake characters visited a local pizzeria, there’s a fish fry, and — of course — scenes around the lake. It’s like summer on paper!

Robin Lancaster, a twenty-six-year-old former kindergarten teacher, has her summer and her life all figured out. She’s ready to be on her own, writing and illustrating her children’s stories at her family’s beloved lake house. Once there, she intends to rekindle a romance with Caleb Jackson, the area’s top hunting and fishing guide, and bag him for herself.
Complications arise from the start when Robin finds out her mother has rented the lake house to a man they know nothing about.
Matthew McLaughlin, forty-year-old widowed university professor and author from California, shows up at Pine Lake in crisis. A sabbatical might be his only hope to save much more than his career. He needs a place of refuge. Sharing the lake house with a lighthearted young woman and her dog is the last thing on his mind.
Caleb Jackson has his own plans. He’s used to things going his way, but a man staying in Robin’s house presents unforeseen challenges. When paths unavoidably tangle for these three, hearts are on the line.

This sounds like a really good read.
Sounds like good book. Nice cover.
I love to “escape” to the mountains in Colorado. This book is perfect for summertime!
Looks like an interesting book.
Thanks for the contest.
My favorite place to escape to his my sunroom/bedroom. It’s where I get to read to my hearts content if time allows. Robin sounds like a great character. I like that she’s one of those that has everything figured then, things charge, and life isn’t so easy. I’ve been one of those. God changed my plans and now I have 3 more kids beside my 2 who are 10 years older than my 3 youngest. Then God had a big ole laugh and gave me identical twins 18 months after #3. I wouldn’t trade them for anything.
A romance with pizza and a fish fry sounds like my kind of romance!
