Eating at restaurants for Thanksgiving

Some people love to cook a feast for Thanksgiving!  Turkey, dressing, the works — the more on the menu, the better.

I like going to those people’s houses for Thanksgiving.

It’s not that I don’t enjoy cooking, because it does have its rewards.  It’s all the prep, cleanup, and tight waistbands that happen afterwards that I don’t like.

Our family enjoys eating at a restaurant for Thanksgiving.

We started doing that when I was expecting my first child, and we’d just moved into our new home.  My mom and stepdad drove down to spend Thanksgiving with us.  There was no way a turkey was getting cooked that year!  It didn’t make sense to spend a ton of money on dinner for 4 at home, when we (read: I) could enjoy my family’s visit without being on my preggo feet all day.

Now, I realize that the restaurant workers might like to be at their own house for Thanksgiving.  Some have told me, though, that they volunteer for holiday shifts because they get overtime, good tips, or whatever.  If we go out on a special occasion like Thanksgiving, we try to show extra loving-kindness to our server and the other staff who make our meal special.  It’s easier to do that when I’m not feeding the five thousand.

I’m so sad that the Ryan’s Buffet near our home is closed.  We can’t use our meal passes before they expire, so one lucky Savings in Seconds reader will win a set of 4 meal passes to use at any participating Ovation Brands  restaurant (Ryan’s, Old Country Buffet, Hometown Buffet, Country Buffet, Fire Mountain.)   Maybe this year instead of cooking for everyone, you can enjoy watching them pick what they want from the hot lunch line!

We really only eat on special occasions. Holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas are special, but we prefer to stay home for those meals. We like preparing the meal with family and friends.

I like both actually! There are some years that we go to a relatives house if everyone can get together, and I’ve had it at my place a few times, but some years when it is just the immediate family we end up at a local restaurant.

  17. Karen Dittrich says

Home eating because you can control the ingredients that go into the meals.

  19. Sarah Oswald says

We eat over my sister’s house the entire family so it’s cheaper than eating out but it would be less work for us if we could afford to eat out.

  20. Amy Greenwood says

I prefer restaurants; the food is great, the servers are friendly and I don’t have to do the dishes that night. Fantastic 🙂

  22. Mellissa Clark says

  23. Laurie Emerson says

  24. Buddy Garrett says

I prefer eating at home. Restaurants are crowded on holidays.

  25. Tamra Phelps says

While I like eating at home, I don’t object to holiday meals at good restaurants, and these are good ones. I always think of the scene at the Chinese restaurant in A Christmas Story, lol.

  26. Kirsten Lyon says

Eating at a restaurant is way easier than spending hours preparing something homemade, and then being stuck with all these leftovers!!

  27. If I am going to eat out during the holidays, I avoid going on the actual day. I make a point of going the week before or after. Celebrations should be about spending time with loved ones, not based on a calendar. I have been that person forced to work on a holiday, when I would have been home with my family.

  28. Eating at a restaurant would really save time and effort. It would only be the issue of finding one open in my area
