Check out this new picture book from triple Caldecott winner David Wiesner: Robobaby (Clarion; 9/1/2020; ISBN: 978-0544987319; Hardcover $17.99; Ages 4-7; 32 pages)! In this hilarious gem, it’s big sister to the rescue when a new baby is delivered to a family of robots and the adults are flummoxed by technical difficulties.

One giveaway winner will receive a hardcover copy with a signed, specially designed bookplate!

Get in on the STEM train with this cute new picture book. Robobaby has a main message about sibling bonding, but there’s a deeper message of creativity and problem-solving there. The colorful illustrations add a lot of interest, and the text format/placement makes it a unique read. I noticed a lot of sound words that kids will enjoy making! Though the book’s humor is geared more toward older kids, younger readers will enjoy it, too.

I highly suggest reading this with your kids so you can guide their understanding. One important discussion topic — ask your child to identify emotions and appropriate responses based on the robots’ expressions. Create a social story by looking at the illustrations instead of depending on the text or dialogue. This is a great way to help your child recognize how others are feeling, and gives you a chance to build their emotional toolbox.

About the Book: A new baby’s arrival is a big moment in any family, even a family of robots. Award winner David Wiesner captures the excitement and fanfare when baby Flange appears—as a crate full of components. The adults bungle the process of assembling Flange, with catastrophic results. Big sister Cathy, with her handy toolbox and advanced knowledge of robotics and IT, hasn’t been allowed to help, but in the ensuing chaos she calmly clears up the technical difficulties and bonds with her new baby brother.

Robobaby is an eye-opening blend of the familiar and the fanciful that is laugh out loud funny. Gorgeously illustrated, it joyously celebrates girl ingenuity and maker culture in a fantastically fun way.

About the author: David Wiesner is internationally renowned for his visual storytelling and has won the Caldecott Medal three times—for TuesdayThe Three Pigs, and Flotsam—the second person in history to do so. He is also the recipient of three Caldecott Honors, for Free FallSector 7, and Mr. Wuffles. He lives near Philadelphia with his family. Learn more at his website: http://www.davidwiesner.com/
