Of all the WWII novels I’ve read, this one is definitely the most surprising. The book goes behind the scenes with two unlikely characters: a female photographer and a soldier bent on saving priceless art. A few weeks before reading this, I went to the movies with my family and happened to notice a poster for the upcoming film “Monuments Men.” I hadn’t heard of the group before and wondered who they were. When I received Shadowed by Grace to review, I found out that the Monuments Men risked their lives to save European culture and art during the destruction of World War II. It’s a fascinating story; you should Google it!Knowing so little about the WWII era made it difficult for me to appreciate the nuances of this book. I cringe at the thought of warfare, despite coming from a military family. The details of the front lines give me nightmares, so I skimmed those parts in this book to avoid the anxiety that I’d surely feel afterward. The story of photo journalist Rachel Justice was a good twist and created a pleasant mystery to solve within the story. The book seemed a bit longer than necessary, though, because I was eager to find out what would happen.
The clean, classy scenes in the book countered by the cloak and dagger missions made Shadowed by Grace seem almost like a black-and-white spy movie. The desperation that Rachel Justice felt in searching for her father turned my emotions upside down. How in the world could she find him with so little to go on? There was so much riding on the fact that she could be in the right place at the right time. By the time I hit the last few chapters, I felt myself hanging on every word until the end of the story. Thanks to Litfuse for allowing me to participate in this book tour!
