Disclosure: I received a free book; opinions shared are mine.

In my first year of teaching 6th grade, I was assigned 3 different levels of math classes and 1 period of introductory Spanish.  Since the middle school foreign language program was brand new, I was able to plan the curriculum myself.  It was a blast!  I loved teaching the basics to those eager students.  They learned the alphabet, colors, numbers, seasons, and other vocabulary.   Any slang phrases I taught were innocent and simple.  Ulysses Press offers an adult version for those who want to know What They Didn’t Teach You In Spanish Class!

This book is not for beginning students of the Spanish language.  It assumes that you have a working grasp of the language.  Those who can carry on a textbook conversation will take the skill to the next level.  One feature I really liked was that the book makes dialect distinctions.  Slang isn’t universal; it varies from culture to culture.  It changes depending on geography and situation.  This book handles the nuances of the language in a helpful manner.

This book is for adults, so don’t hand it off to your teen enrolled in Spanish I.  It covers a lot of scenarios that you might experience while traveling, as well as some strong profanity.

One reader will win a copy of What They Didn’t Teach You in Spanish Class, thanks to Ulysses Press. The giveaway is open to US readers ages 18+. Void where prohibited by law.  Good luck !

  1. I always joke that I only know enough Spanish to get myself into trouble. As a native Texan, I’ve learned how valuable knowing the language can be!
