Disclosure: I received this book from the publisher for review. Opinions shared are mine.
Anytime there’s a new Riley Sager book, sign me up. I’ve read all 5 of his book and would pretty much read a phone book if it was under his name on Goodreads. While Surive the Night wasn’t my favorite of his novels, it was a fun read!
You’ve gotta love a 1991-based story that has Nirvana playing from a mixtape. I had a Grand Am when I was in high school in 1992, but mine was not in as good of shape as Josh’s. In fact, there were many trips home from college that had to be paused so I could poor water on my radiator to cool it down. Ah, the good old days!
The entire story takes place within a 6-hour road trip, with some flashbacks thrown in for good measure. Main character Charlie had some pretty significant issues, so I didn’t blame her for wanting to head home. She didn’t go about it in a smart way, though. Think of every possible bad decision she could make, and she pretty much made it. I was frustrated with her, as well as scared for her.
In the hands of any other author, this story could have been a complete bust; however, it’s Riley Sager so the writing is superb. There are enough unexpected moments to keep the momentum all the way to the end. Although I figured out the twists in advance, it was a fun ride.
I forgot this was on my TBR list! I need to grab a copy – I always love Riley Sager’s books!
Thanks for the great review 🙂
