Once again I wonder why the cover of an Amish romance novel has to be a picture of an Amish girl. The pages of The Calling contain so many more images I would have chosen in place of the pretty girl on the cover. An old dilapidated house, a bundle of letters, a thimble with roses around its base….all of these come to mind. When it all boils down, The Calling is a huge blend of situations that all fight to be resolved. We reunite with the characters from The Letters as they continue with their normal lives on Eagle Hill. It was helpful to have read the first book in the series, although I think you could get by without it if you really wanted to start with The Calling.
I really enjoy author Suzanne Woods Fisher. She has a good sense of humor and handles the characters’ personalities with spunk. In this novel, we meet a group of “wayward girls” living in a group home; this was an interesting contrast between the Amish community that surrounded the community with love. Some of the issues from The Letters resurfaced in this book. There were a lot of separate situations going on in The Calling and it was somewhat difficult to keep it all straight. Then we have the typical Amish romance characteristics……really, that’s an aspect that could have been entirely left out of this book and it would have been fine! There was enough meat in the story that I felt satisfied for the most part, though I couldn’t help but feel that Fisher left a lot of loose strings in this book. Perhaps it’s all supposed to lead right into Book #3. Whatever the reason, I felt somewhat disappointed with the ending. There was no closure for me, which is usually a turnoff for the rest of the series. I hope that the next book wraps things up a bit more tidily.
In The Calling, we learn a lot more about The Sisters. This group of spinsters live together in an old house that could be on an episode of Hoarders. Throughout the story much is revealed about these amazing women. It made me appreciate their generosity and thoughtfulness. It also made me want to talk to an elderly person! Out of the entire book, reading about the sisters was my favorite part. Well, maybe aside from the recipe for Rose’s Famous Blueberry Buckle which I plan to make someday!
