Here’s a new one for me. I’ve never read a ghost story by a Christian author. If you’re a fan of gothic romance, look for The Curse of Misty Wayfair by Jaime Jo Wright. It’s spine-tingling gold!
This is Wright’s third novel, but the first one I’ve had the chance to read. It’s absolutely brilliant. Written with a dual timeline, the two stories are connected by the local legend of Misty Wayfair. It’s said that her ghost wanders the small town, serving as the harbinger of death.
My mom used to tell me about my grandmother, who worked as a medium in Okinawa. Since then, I’ve always been interested in ghost stories but ashamed to mention it in Christian circles where such things might be considered blasphemy. The Curse of Misty Wayfair is what I’ve been looking for all my life. It’s clean, there’s no mention of demonic activity or the occult, yet there’s just enough of a spooky factor to make it a creepy read.
The characters in this book are so different and unique; it made me wonder how the author came up with them! I loved how she seamlessly worked in mentions of mental illness, sibling bickering, special needs, and other real-life situations. The story wasn’t far-fetched or overly perfect, yet it all worked.
The faith-based element of the story was so beautifully written. I noted several favorite quotes, one of which is pictured above. There’s a beautiful message of trusting God to finish His good work, and knowing that there’s something more than this life waiting for us. It’s just so lovely, and it worked well with the whole otherworldly theme.
I’m definitely going to check out the rest of Jaime Jo Wright’s books!
