Meet our new DIY project! A few months ago, our travel trailer was stolen right out of our driveway. Can you believe someone would do that?! 🙁 Big sad, as my daughter would say. Our family missed camping together, so we pinched our pennies until we could buy a used popup. This fixer-upper needs some TLC but it’s perfect for us. I’m no Joanna Gaines so don’t expect to see shiplap inside. I never thought we’d be doing a popup makeover. While we’re talking about fixing up stuff, check out The DIY Guide to Building a Family That Lasts by Gary Chapman and Sherry Warden. It’s a whole different way of looking at home improvement — and it might just be the most important thing you ever do for your family!

This workbook is similar to doing family therapy. I love that this book requires action, not just thought. If you want your family members to be more considerate, for example, the authors call on the reader to set an example with more consideration. I heard myself in many of the examples in the book. Many of the examples mention a husband/wife household, but a single parent could easily adapt the suggestions to suit different living situations.

Home improvement is definitely a project you’ll want to give yourself time to work on. You won’t see amazing results overnight, but you will be able to notice small changes. At our house, it’s a constant work in progress. I also appreciate that the authors don’t make this seem like an easy-to-do task. They point out the need for “sweat equity” in building a better home. It’s worth every bit, though! I respect the positive thinking that The DIY Guide encourages. Each chapter highlights an improvement that’s actionable and measurable. Check out the chapter list below.
