After finishing The Family Upstairs by Lisa Jewell, I had to sit in silence for a few minutes. It was a darkly entertaining book — disturbing in a Flowers in the Attic kind of way, yet so twisted that I had to keep reading to find out how it ended!

As usual, I recommend going into this book with as little knowledge of the storyline as possible. Don’t read the summary on Goodreads. If reviews reveal too much about characterization, skim on by. I was confused by this story for the first entire section, but it was so worth it! If you’re sensitive to domestic abuse topics, heads up. There are so many triggers in this book that you probably DO want to read a spoiler just to make sure this is the book for you!
This is a spoiler-free zone — > What I do want you to know is that Jewell presents this tale with the perfect sprinkling of mystery and creep factor. I felt like I could see this story on the nightly news, but it was also somehow completely new and unprecedented. I read a lot of psychological suspense, and this one had me absolutely gobsmacked time and again.
It feels a bit sociopathic to say that I enjoyed this book, but there it is. It’s nice to find something new (even if it’s utterly horrifying) in the psychological suspense world.
Thank you for sharing, i’ll add it to my tbr
Sounds like an interesting read once you get past the confusing beginning. Thanks for the review.
