For those of you who are parents of young ones, it’s likely that you’re in a new role as homeschool teacher. I’ve been a teacher for over 2 decades, yet it’s a change for me as well. My own kids (high school and elementary students) are working from home, and I’ve tried to set some guidelines about that. It’s tough! The single biggest thing I’m focusing on is INDEPENDENT READING. I want them to spend time daily in a book — mandatory 20 minutes, but I won’t complain if they read longer. I’ve tried to make it fun for my son, who doesn’t really like to read. I set up the “reading hammock” outside one day. We read on the porch. Next week we’ll all pile in the king-size bed and read together. Whatever keeps them in books, I’m doing it.

I also plan to point my kids (especially my son) toward content-rich books. He studied the American Revolution in social studies this year, so I will be sharing The Ghosts of Saratoga with him. He enjoys history, and this story has a solid base in historical information without being boring. It’s short enough to finish in a few days, too.

The Ghosts of Saratoga would also be a good read-together book. It has some dialect to keep kids’ attention and make the story more authentic. Also, you could incorporate the battle details in an impromptu geography lesson.

I think the story would benefit from a few illustrations, at least to separate the chapters. Most of my students enjoy reading ebooks, but they usually choose a split-screen format instead of scrolling down a PDF. Giving the eyes a visual break would be helpful.
