The Letters by SWF

When I signed up for The Letters book tour with Litfuse, I was excited to read another book by Suzanne Woods Fisher. I’ve enjoyed her books in the past and knew that this would be good, too. It was hard, though, to really get involved in this book. The chapters were very choppy and switched between characters at the drop of a hat. It wasn’t unusual to read from four different perspectives in the same chapter. That made it hard to stay attentive to the main issue in the story. I respected Rose, a single mom who was recently widowed, for trying to keep her family afloat after her husband’s death. Rose is an intelligent woman who comes up with a business plan that is so radical in the eyes of her Amish community. Her situation made me wonder how I might handle it if I were left alone with my children. I admired her determination to keep her family together.

Another thing I liked about the story was the relationship that Rose tried to foster with her mother-in-law. Even when the older woman became cranky and somewhat belligerent, Rose tried to treat her with kindness and dignity. I hope that I am that kind of daughter in law.

Really, this book has a lot going for it. The ideas presented in the book are inspiring and realistic. I just wish that the story had been more focused on the main characters and their points of view.
