Disclosure: Many thanks to Libro.fm for providing me with a copy of the audiobook! Opinions shared are mine.
If you haven’t discovered Alex Michaelides yet, you’re in for a real treat! I loved The Silent Patient in 2019, and thanks to Libro.fm, I was able to listen to The Maidens audiobook.
Though I was planning to rate this a 4, the end made me bump it up to a 5. I can see how this book would receive mixed reviews. It’s too easy to go in expecting The Silent Patient (which was amazing) and this did not compare in the same way. There wasn’t one character that I really even liked in The Maidens, except maybe Fred. The pace felt very slow and sometimes boring. However, like I said, the end was completely worth waiting for, and it was exactly what I’d expect from this author!
The author’s focus on Greek tragedy made this so interesting. It added a unique historic and cultural element that I really loved.
The audiobook was terrific! I usually listen to audiobooks on 1.5 or at least 1.25, but needed this one at normal speed because it was harder to follow along. There were many times when I needed to rewind a bit because I missed something due to the narrator’s soothing voice lulling me into inattention.
No, I have not read any of his books.
