It’s finally feeling like fall around here, and I LOVE it. The chill in the evening air gives me the perfect reason to scoop up a good book and soft blanket. Diann Mills is a pro at offering a twisty mystery. If you’re into clean reads with an edge, Trace of Doubt is a terrific book to add to your fall must-read list!

In Trace of Doubt, Mills takes two characters who would be unlikely partners and pairs them together in a tense situation. Shelby tries to escape the shadow of her past, but it’s tough to do that in a small town. She was so grateful for those who risked their lives to keep her safe, and I appreciated that. As I read, her story made me think hard about judgment, gossip, and jumping to conclusions. There’s a gentle Christian message in this book which fits well with Shelby’s journey. The characters lean on God in a positive, inspiring way.

The author’s gift of writing comes through in her characters’ innermost thoughts. I generally like a story with a strong plot and lots of action, but in this book, the characters’ internal struggles were more engaging for me. I made notes about quotes like “I woke with guilt raging through me like a fever” (Denton) and “If not for Jesus, I’d find no purpose…He was in the business of turning ashes into something beautiful” (Shelby). There’s also a Jon Bon Jovi reference….gotta love that!
